CHAPTER
TWENTY
The odds were against it. Winning the lotto might have been more likely. Yet somehow, both Logan and Reggie had forgotten their phones on their morning run. Reggie blamed it on the beers. She rarely drank and was even less likely to have two beers. Logan was blaming it on a few hours with Reggie where they weren't interviewing suspects or chasing down leads. Her touching and holding his hand might have knocked him a little off balance too. Of course, he only played his excuses in his head, not aloud.
The sun was just making a full appearance in the gray sky when he reached his apartment. His phone was ringing before he got the key in the door. It was sitting on the kitchen counter next to the coffeepot. Right where he'd left it after filling the pot with water, only he was supposed to pick it up and slip it into the pocket of his sweatshirt. It was Reggie.
"Yeah? Just got in."
"Then you haven't checked your messages?" she said.
"No, because I've got the phone to my ear right now. What's up? Did we miss something big?"
"You might say that. What are the odds we both forgot our phones? We're in deep shit. I'll let you listen to Castillo's voicemail. I'm too much of a lady to repeat it. See you at the precinct. I'm thinking of showing up in disguise." She hung up.
Logan glanced at his phone. Four missed calls and one voicemail from Castillo. Logan was almost hesitant to play it. His thumb tapped the voicemail.
"Are you fucking kidding me? Where the hell are you? You should have your phone on you at all times. I expect you to pick up even if you're in the middle of a goddamn orgasmic sized shit. Even if you're jacking off to porn, I expect you to drop your fucking dick and pick up." It was the angriest he'd ever heard Castillo and that was saying a lot about a man who made the Grinch look like Mr. Rogers. "The reporters and newspapers are insisting on a press conference. I've been putting them off hoping you two would have already grabbed this judge killer, but since you obviously have better things to do than catch fucking murderers, the guy is still strolling around town drinking lattes and buying designer shoes with his stolen cash and now I have to explain to every damn news organization why it is that my two best detectives haven't caught the guy and why they don't even feel the case is important enough to answer their fucking phones."
That was it. The end of the voicemail. Either Castillo ran out of steam or he burst a vein and dropped dead from an aneurism halfway through his rant or the rest of the message got cut off. Logan showered, gulped down coffee that was too hot and headed out the door. He didn't hear from Reggie again but pulled in right behind her as her motorcycle rolled
